Dr. C.A.Y. Banu Priya, Ph.D. (Banu Priya Yogeeswaran), is an Indian entrepreneur and scientist recognized for her contributions to clinical research, biotechnology, and therapeutic nutrition. She is the founder and director of BR Medical Research and Software Solutions, a Hyderabad-based biotechnology startup dedicated to developing innovative food and drug solutions aimed at improving patient health through science-based nutrition and research.
Born into a modest lower middle-class family, Dr. Banu Priya’s journey reflects determination, resilience, and a deep commitment to education. Despite financial hardships, she pursued her academic goals with strong encouragement from her parents, whom she often credits for supporting her studies during difficult times. She completed her Ph.D. under the guidance of her respected mentor Dr. Sadashivan Pillai at FIPPAT, whose mentorship played a significant role in shaping her scientific outlook and research discipline. Her academic background spans several fields including toxicology, biochemistry, microbiology, botany, pest management, and marine biology, giving her a multidisciplinary perspective in life sciences.
Dr. Banu Priya began her professional journey in the clinical trial industry in 1999 under the guidance of Dr. A. Ramachandran. Over the years, she worked with organizations such as SIRO Clinpharm, Paragon, and Novetech Australia, gaining extensive experience in clinical research, regulatory processes, and drug safety monitoring. Her career later expanded into leadership roles, including her position at G7 Synergon, where she led initiatives in clinical research, pharmacovigilance, and healthcare software systems.
A personal health experience involving elevated diabetic sugar levels became a turning point in her career. Motivated by this challenge, she shifted her focus from traditional clinical research to therapeutic food science, exploring how functional nutrition could support disease prevention and recovery. This transition inspired her to begin developing scientific formulations designed to address health conditions through nutrition-based interventions.
In 2020, she founded BR Medical Research and Software Solutions, with the goal of bridging the gap between biomedical research and practical healthcare nutrition. The company focuses on developing therapeutic food formulations, innovative food processing technologies, and preservative-free nutritional products. Under her leadership, the company has consistently progressed from research to pilot production and scalable manufacturing methods, introducing new therapeutic products each year.
Among her notable innovations are salt-free millet-based foods designed for renal disease patients, plant-based vegan mineral concentrates that support bone health, and protein nano-absorption technologies that improve nutrient uptake. She has also worked on therapeutic formulations addressing conditions such as muscular dystrophy, iron toxicity, fluoride toxicity, and fluorosis in tribal populations, as well as nutrition support for sickle cell disease. Additional developments include Ryle tube millet-based medical nutrition formulas and reduced-fat honey crystal products. One of her research contributions demonstrated the superior quality of Indian organic tea farming, contributing to innovations in value-added matcha-style tea formulations.
Dr. Banu Priya’s work has resulted in more than 20 research publications, along with three patent applications, one of which was recognized as a “Bull’s Eye Invention” in 2021. She also holds three trademarks—Myglyindex, De-NaPKC, and Aha Rayale—associated with her therapeutic food technologies.
Her research initiatives have received institutional recognition as well. She was awarded a grant from the ANGRAU Tirupati Center for developing a starch-free soup formulation, and her millet-based therapeutic formulations were selected for the IIMR INGRAIN Cohort 7 program in 2025.
Beyond entrepreneurship and research, Dr. Banu Priya actively contributes to academic mentoring and innovation ecosystems. She has guided students in pharmacovigilance, clinical protocol development, and food processing technologies, and has also designed a university-approved course in pharmacovigilance. She mentors startups at the Periyar Business Incubation Confederation (BIC-PU) and serves as a project reviewer at CIIC Chennai. She is also a life member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP).
Her contributions have been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the Telangana Women Leadership Award in Healthcare (2025), Inventor of the Year awarded by the Mayor of Thanjavur (2023), Mahila Pragnya Puraskar by the COWE Telangana Chapter (2022), and the India 5000 Women Achiever Award (2021). She has also received the Superwomen Award (2021) and was the youngest recipient of the Excellence in Clinical Research Award in 1997.
Currently, Dr. Banu Priya is working on therapeutic food research related to Alzheimer’s disease, continuing her mission to integrate nutrition and medical science. Outside her professional work, she is an arborist by hobby with a collection of over 200 plant species, and an artist practicing traditional Hindu script writing. She remains grateful to her parents for enabling her education and believes that her own health experiences continue to inspire her commitment to research that benefits patients and society.
